Newberry Health History
Newberry Health traces its origins to the 1925 opening of Newberry County Hospital, a community-driven effort to provide local healthcare. Before its establishment, local residents had to travel outside the county for medical care. The formation of the Newberry County Hospital Association in 1923 marked the beginning of a vision to build a local hospital, with citizens raising funds through stock sales, linen showers, and penny drives by schoolchildren. On December 22, 1925, Newberry County Hospital opened its doors to serve the community.
In 1937, The People’s Hospital was established to serve the African American community under the leadership of Dr. J.E. Grant Sr. After a merger with Newberry County Memorial Hospital in 1952, the hospital expanded its services.
The current hospital on Kinard Street was dedicated in 1976, with a significant renovation and expansion project completed in 2002. In response to growing demand, satellite offices were opened, including a Little Mountain location in 2003. Additional expansions followed, in part thanks to a voter-approved Penny Sales Infrastructure Tax in 2007 that enhanced laboratories, pediatric rooms, and oncology services, and the creation of a new Wellness and Rehabilitation Center in 2008.
The addition of oncology care, including outpatient chemotherapy and infusion treatments at our Oncology and Infusion Center, ensured that local cancer patients could receive expert care close to home.
In 2025, recognizing the expanding scope of services offered, Newberry County Hospital introduced a new name - Newberry Health - to reflect our broader health services. Newberry Health is more than a hospital, but the 90-bed facility remains the cornerstone of our award-winning system, known for delivering high-quality care and an exceptional patient experience.
